In 1969, Ford was trying its best to shake the image of the Ford Mustang. Before 1969 the Ford Mustang was considered a “Sunday Driver” kind of car. It was starting to gain popularity with people who wanted to put their own performance mods on it. Knowing the Ford Mustang had the capabilities of increased power they came out with the 429 Cobra Jet. This car set the standard of future Mustangs to come. This was not about a style change just yet but more about dropping in a big engine to silence the critics. Not that much changed with the wheels either. On the Cobra Jet Mustang you could only get a set of 14 inch steel rims. The bullitt mustang rim is still the most popular style for that time period. 1968 was the year that Ford decided to shake things up a little bit. The Ford Mustang GT500 KR came into the publics eye. This was also the first year of the very popular Bullitt Mustang. Steve McQueen drove the all green Bullitt Ford Mustang in one of the most famous car chase scenes of all time. The wheels on the car he drove were all black 5 star wheels. In 1968 the Ford Mustang started to become more of a muscle car than just a cruiser. Ford also decided to change the look of some of the OEM Mustang wheels. The Ford Mustang GT500 KR came with 15 inch steel wheels. You could still buy the Mustang with hubcaps if you really wanted too but why would you. Not that much in change for the Ford Mustang from its roots. The 1967 Ford Mustang looks very similar to the 1965 Mustang. The engineers are Ford Motor Company were probably building behind close doors bigger changes for the future instead of changing what was working. In 1967 the Ford Mustangs wheels were still the same size as its previous two years. The styles were not that much or any different too. The 1966 Ford Mustang is basically the same as the 1965 Mustang. The features are very similar and so were the engines. Maybe Ford enjoyed the success they had with the 1965 version hey decided to keep things the same for the most part. Not that much was done with the Mustangs wheels. They were the same steel rim as the 1965. If you did not like the same steel rim you could get a wire hub cap. In 1965 was when the first Ford Mustang was debuted. Who would of thought how popular the car would of became. The first style of Mustang Wheel to be introduced came in a 5 star variety. It was not a true 5 star rim because it kind of had a honey comb effect but it was not that bad for 1960 standards. The 1965 OEM Ford Mustang wheels were 14 inches in diameter. You could get them in 14 x 6 or 14 x 7. Some other options you had were to get hub caps. Back in the day they were not so bad to have. Nowadays people can’t stand to have them on their cars. Its more of a headache than anything. For people looking to go bigger they usually get a 19 x 9.5 inch rim for the front and a 20 x 10.5 inch rim for the back. When you buy a set of staggered rims you will see increased handling and performance because now the front end of the car will be a little bit lower. This is better for aerodynamics as more wind will catch the rear spoiler pushing the back tires to the ground for a better grip. The only real downside of buying staggered wheels is the cost. Most rim and tire packages are set up where you cannot rotate the wheels and tires around because they are made for a specific side of the car. It is mainly because of the grooves on the tire tread. Every year Ford Motor Company introduces a new look to all of their Ford Mustangs. One of the features which gets a change is the center cap. Some of the Mustang rims have a similar look to them. Most have the classic Mustang with the red, white, and blue in the background.When the center cap has the black background you can expect to see these center caps on Bullitt Mustang Wheels. Some of the more famous center caps were on Cobra Mustangs. The classic snake head is popular amongst those who want to upgrade to a cobra wheel. On the older mustangs Ford would put just a chrome mustang on the center cap. These were just a few of the more popular center caps you would find on a set of mustang wheels.

Here is a video I found on YouTube the other day. The 22 inch rims give it a clean and custom look. It does not say what kind of custom mustang wheels these are but they are unique.

This is one of my all time favorite Ford Mustangs. Its probably because I was 12 when this car came out and I always wanted it. They only made about 2,200 of these with the options you see. The bright red color, white wheels, and white top. Sometimes you will see this one with chrome Mustang wheels on it but it looks much better with the OEM Mustang wheels in my opinion.
